Beyond limits on the X-plorer Days 2023
The #BMWdriveit event this year was all about the power of contrasts.
Welcome to the powerful contrasts of the Basque Country. This year, our influencers had the chance to explore Bilbao and San Sebastian with our iX1 and X1 models and they created fantastic experiences. Let´s follow them on their route and dig deeper into the urban lifestyle, sustainability, nature, and adrenaline the Basque Country has to offer.
If you would like to follow the tracks of the creators, the map will show you the route and every stop. Let´s explore and go beyond our limits!
BILBAO
Bilbao, near both San Sebastián and Asturias, is one of the jewels of northern Spain. Bilbao has developed into a sophisticated modern city while still preserving its traditional Basque culture.
Bilbao has reinvented itself and has been transformed from a grey city dominated by industry, into a cosmopolitan, designer metropolis. Great architects, including Norman Foster and Frank O. Gehry, have left their illustrious hallmarks on the city.
SAN JUAN DE GAZTELUGACHE
The area of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a unique jewel among all the places to see in the Basque Country. Located in the municipality of Bermeo, this enclave has become very popular in recent times due to the "Game of Thrones" series and, of course, its incomparable beauty.
In Gaztelugache the force of nature, history, and tradition are combined, giving rise to one of those magical corners that you cannot miss on your visit to the Biscayan coast.
WINDPARK OIZ
The park has 25 megawatts of installed power. It has 850 kW unit power wind turbines –which provide energy equivalent to the consumption of 65,000 people– and prevents the emission of 58,240 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Especially noteworthy is the respect for the environment with which the park has been built and which has led to the adoption of bird-safety measures and the marking of heritage elements.
ZARAUZ
Surf Experience with Marlon Lipke. Surf is a unique experience with which, as well as enjoying the sun and the sea, you can also practice sport. Professional surfer Marlon Lipke has dedicated his life to surfing, and by doing so, he travels most of the time, searching for perfect waves.
SAN SEBASTIAN
San Sebastián is a tourist city located in the mountainous Spanish region of the Basque Country. It is known for La Concha beach and Ondarreta beach, which stand out for their picturesque promenade facing the bay and their world-renowned restaurants run by innovative chefs. In the cobbled Parte Vieja, luxury shops coexist with pintxo bars paired with local wines and bite-sized regional specialties.
IDIAZABAL
Visit a local cheese factory and tasting. Idiazabal cheese is a traditionally crafted semi-soft cheese by the shepherds from the Basque Country and Navarra, close to the Spanish Pyrenees. It is elaborated with raw fresh sheep milk from Latxa and Carranzana breeds.
It is slowly ripened and naturally smoked with beech or cherry wood. A matured rich cheese with a perfume bouquet and rich, buttery flavor.
VITORIA
The Vitoria-Gasteiz Street Art Tour opens you up to the hidden treasures of art in the streets of this beautiful city.
This open-air gallery, known as the mural itinerary of Vitoria-Gasteiz (IMVG), runs through the streets of the old town, surrounded by churches, palaces and remains of the old walls, and through the working-class neighborhood of Zaramaga, showing us the most current and participative of the capital of Álava.
SALTO DEL NERVION
These mountains draw impressive landscapes, but the quintessential panoramic view of the region is undoubtedly the one that can be seen from the Mirador del Nervión, a balcony suspended over the Délika canyon, from which it is possible to see the Nervión river in the rainy season.
It’s a spectacular waterfall of almost 300 meters. It is the largest waterfall in Spain and one of the most important in Europe.
